Velddrif is well known for it’s “Bokkoms”.  A series of small individual factories, along the river, form part of “BOKKOMLAAN”.

As we traveled along the main road towards Piketberg, we saw a Signboard pointing towards “BOKKOMLAAN”

A long walkway next to the river, with little fish factories.  Each with their own small jettie.

Today, the catching of Herring in the Berg River, is prohibited and must be netted in the open sea,  just off Laaiplek.

This broken Jettie caught my eye….  wonder how many fisherman made use of this handy structure in the past…

There is a pickeling process that takes place before the fish get tied into bunches of ten and hanged out to dry.

I could imagine living RIGHT HERE!

birds at "Bokkomlaan"

The area has a variety of Bird Species.  These Birds were close to the water’s edge at “Bokkomlaan”.  It seemed as if they were quite comfortable with us being so close to them.
