My Dad was a Great Lover of the “BOKKOM”…. He could sit for hours just simply enjoying the cleaning of this dried fish. The Salty Strips of Fish Biltong was shared with us, but also just…..
Velddrif is well known for it’s “Bokkoms”. A series of small individual factories, along the river, form part of “BOKKOMLAAN”.
As we traveled along the main road towards Piketberg, we saw a Signboard pointing towards “BOKKOMLAAN”
breathtaking…
A long walkway next to the river, with little fish factories. Each with their own small jettie.
Years ago the fisherman catching Mullet in the Berg River, tied their “bakkies” (small fishing boats) to the Jetties while unloading their catch.

Today, the catching of Herring in the Berg River, is prohibited and must be netted in the open sea, just off Laaiplek.
a Story without Words…
This broken Jettie caught my eye…. wonder how many fisherman made use of this handy structure in the past…
a Fishing Factory in the Lane
The name of this little Factory says it all!
…interesting…
This type of structure, is used for the drying process of the “Bokkoms”
“Bokkoms” under cover
There is a pickeling process that takes place before the fish get tied into bunches of ten and hanged out to dry.
another little fish factory
At the Visvlekhuis Factory, they don’t only dry “Bokkoms“….
work in progress at Visvlekhuis
Here the staff of Visvlekhuis are preparing Snoek & Bokkoms for drying. (photos supplied by owners)
…such a peaceful setting…
We enjoyed the peacefulness while strolling along…
Accommodation in “Bokkomlaan”
I could imagine living RIGHT HERE!
birds on the Berg River
The area has a variety of Bird Species. These Birds were close to the water’s edge at “Bokkomlaan”. It seemed as if they were quite comfortable with us being so close to them.
Flamingos on the Berg River
The Flamingo is one of the Bird Species that nests on the Berg River at Velddrif.
Bird Lookout
At the “Lookout”, on the River, we could admire these Graceful Birds at our leisure. Look out for a future post, with more information about the Bird life in this area…
